Marta Melis

Instructor in Pharmacology

I am originally from Italy, where I earned my Ph.D. in Cell Biology. Later, when I joined the National Institutes of Health (NIH), I became interested in studying the molecular mechanisms of chronic liver diseases of viral and non-viral origin and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). After my time at the NIH I worked as a Research Associate at the University of Pittsburgh for two years and gained further expertise in understanding the transcriptional reprogramming in liver cirrhosis. In March 2016 it was an honor to join Dr. Gudas lab because it completed my research path started in the field of chronic liver diseases and cancer, and now extends towards head and neck tumors. Indeed, my main research projects aim to elucidate the role/s of Retinoids in carcinogenesis, HCC, and cancer of the head and neck.
